I’ve always heard the term writers block. But honestly what exactly is writers block? The Cambridge dictionary defines it as ‘The condition of being unable to create a piece of written work because something in your mind prevents you from doing it’. The Merriam Webster definition is ‘a psychological inhibition preventing a writer from proceeding with a piece’ and the Oxford dictionary claims ‘a problem that writers sometimes have when they cannot think of what to write and have no new ideas’.
I’m more inclined to agree with the Cambridge and Merriam Webster definitions because this weekend I’ve been trying to write. I have the story in my head. It’s a piece I’m doing for university but I’m hoping to turn it into a novel. I know the beginning, middle and end so its literally about getting it down on paper… or in my case a word document. But I’m blocked.
This weekend I’ve barely written 400 words and I think I’ve realised why. Obviously I’m telling a story here and setting a scene but this part of the book isn’t as gripping as the action parts because its a little bit of necessary background.
Tomorrow when I’ve thought about it a little more, I’ll hopefully write much quicker. The goal is to get another 1000 words out this week but I think it won’t be so difficult now because now I get to the nitty gritty of my writing rather than the slightly boring parts. Wish me luck!
